Fitness gear is marketed toward your best-case version of yourself: the person who works out six days a week, stores equipment properly, and replaces worn components on schedule. The spec sheet reflects that person. The return pile reflects everyone else.
The defects that show back up most consistently aren't random. Resistance bands snap at the anchor point, not along the band itself, because the molded rubber where the loop closes is always thinner than the rest. Foam rollers go oval, not flat, because people store them on their side and the density rating on the label describes compression resistance under use, not long-term shape retention under static load. Adjustable dumbbells seize at the selector dial after about eight months of regular use because sweat gets into the locking mechanism and the tolerances are tighter than the materials can sustain. These aren't outliers. They're patterns.

Anyone who's been doing high-volume pushups on one for six months knows that 6mm is the minimum before your wrists start accumulating complaints. The thickness isn't about comfort at first use; it's about whether the mat bottoms out under repeated point load.
The return inspectors see this constantly: the right product in the wrong size. Compression gear is the worst offender, because "one size fits most" in this category genuinely means "fits a narrower range than the packaging implies." A calf sleeve sized by shoe size rather than calf circumference will fit two people with the same shoe size completely differently if one has a 14-inch calf and the other has a 17-inch calf.

Cast iron is more durable than chrome-plated steel but it oxidizes if you don't dry it after use. A dense foam roller won't feel luxurious the first time you use it — it'll feel like rolling on a hard tube — but it'll still be round in three years. The equipment that looks best in a home gym setup is frequently the equipment that fails fastest under real training loads.
You can optimize for aesthetics or longevity. Occasionally both, at a higher price point. Rarely both at mid-range.
Three years of owning the same category of product teaches you what the 90-day review cycle can't. Stitching on fabric products needs to be double-stitched at stress points, and you can verify this by turning the item inside out before purchasing if you're buying in person, or by checking the close-up photos of seams in the product images. A single-lock stitch on a resistance band handle will separate; a bar-tack stitch won't. Handles and grips on equipment need texture that's molded in, not applied as a coating — the coating peels within a year of chalk or sweat exposure.
The products that earn their place are usually the ones that are slightly less exciting to unbox.
